Temecula to Mesquite (342 miles)

The band of intrepid COTV travelers met at Douglas Burgers in Lake Elsinore with a departure time of 9 a.m. Surprisingly, the Sommars arrived 35 minutes early and it was the Priebes who appeared with 1 minute to spare. We started out with 9 cars – Glenore, Keefer, McIntosh, Priebe, Sommars, Urman, Venn, Weber and Weir/Reichardt. The Steeds had to cancel due to Bill's heart surgery and the Weeks would meet us in Heber City, UT, on the second night. It was the first long COTV caravan for the McIntoshes and the Venns. The Glenores were the "wagon masters" and provided trip books full of maps, event tickets, meal reservations, etc., as well as, the first of a series of daily trivia questionnaires.

It was a very hot day and we made our first pit stop in Barstow, where we met a guy test driving a Fisker. All the guys had questions and enjoyed looking under the hood and in the car. Our lunch stop was at the Primm Valley Resort. As we came down the hill into Primm, we noticed a huge new "lake" due to the recent rainstorm. At the resort, we all ate at whichever venue appealed to us – pizza, Irish pub, regular cafe. Then we got back on the road and headed for our next stop at Exotics Racing near the Las Vegas Speedway. We got there just before they closed at 3 p.m. so no one signed up for a drive around the course in a Maserati or Lamborghini, but we did watch a professional driver taking people 2 laps around the course in a Z06 and drifting all the corners.

The temperature increased to 111 between Las Vegas and Mesquite, so once we checked into the Virgin River Casino and Hotel, some folks hit the pool to bring their body temps down. We ate at the Chuckwagon Cafe in the Casino. Judy Venn explained the Chicken Ranch to her table and Doug Glenore gave a "seminar" on poker and "financial management." After dinner some headed to bed and some to the tables.
