Cheyenne Frontier Days – Rodeo Day
We left for Frontier Park at 9 a.m.
and parked as a group near the Old West Museum. We browsed in the gift shop
and then took the 10:00 a.m. group tour called "Behind the Chutes." We were
led by a "cowgirl" on horseback and took a walking tour to see the livestock
used for the various events and the chutes that the bulls and broncs start
from. Afterwards, we checked out the vendors in the Gulch area and eventually
made it to our reserved seats in the grandstands for the rodeo events. There
were pre-rodeo events including small children on horseback doing
barrel-racing, the flags of the sponsors paraded by a women's horseback drill
team, the intro of Miss Rodeo and her Lady in Waiting (next year's Miss
Rodeo.) About 1 p.m. they started the rodeo events – bull riding, bareback
bronc riding, steer wrestling, bronc riding with saddle, steer roping, team
roping, women's barrel racing, and the wild horse race. Instead of seeing all
of one event, they interspersed them so that there was more variety. Some of
the events showed that the guys were much tougher than we would have thought
based on televised rodeo. For instance, in steer wresting, the guys are huge,
200+ pounds, as they throw themselves off their horses onto the steer and then
try to flip it over. The bronc riders, on the other hand, are 5'3"-5'6". The
wild horse race finale was hilarious. There were 11 teams of 3, each given a
wild horse, which they had to hold, saddle and ride around the track in under
4 minutes. Nobody won as horses threw their riders and went the wrong
direction. Two participants left on stretchers.
For dinner, people did their own thing. Doug and Marilyn had made reservations
at the Little Bear Inn and 10 did that, with Doug ordering their "world
famous" deep-fried lobster tail. The Venns stayed in and ordered pizza. The
McIntoshes and the Weeks stayed at Frontier Park and watched 3 more hours of
professional bull riding. The Keefers and Vance and Susan had an early, light
dinner.
It was another evening of lightning
shows.
