Santa Fe to Sedona (450 miles)

The Venns and Webers got up early. The Venns breakasted at the Plaza Cafe. The Webers packed the car. At 8 a.m., when they Spanish Market opened, both couples separately viewed both he Contemporary and Traditional artists' stalls and met about mid way. The Sommars and Urmans took a little longer to get going, but we were all ready to leave at 11 a.m. With Jim in the lead, we headed down the I-25 to Albuquerque and encountered some heavy traffic for a Saturday. We gassed up when we transitioned to the I-40W and decided to break for lunch in Gallup. Jim selected the El Ranch Hotel which has been around for years and was a stopping point for many celebrities traveling across Route 66.

We got back on the road and hit our daily storm. This one was a torrential downpour with very low visibility. We made good time to Flagstaff and headed south on 17 and then onto Route 89A, the Oak Creek Canyon scenic route. Unfortunately, the rain continued strongly so we didn't see much of the scenery and then about 5-7 miles outside Sedona traffic came to a stop. It took us 1 1/2 hours to go 5 miles, during which time we had several conversations with the Inn on Oak Creek, the B&B for the next 2 nights, and with the Cowboy Club, the night's dinner reservation. We did not reach the B&B until 7:30 p.m., but Linda had waited for us and gave us a tour of the facilities and explained the breakfast routine, etc. We cancelled the dinner reservation. Carl and Carroll headed for bed and the rest of us ran through the raindrops to the Javelina Club across the street, for more Mexican food and margaritas. The food was good and so were the margaritas, but "Pablo" had issues with separate checks and then confused the whole bill paying effort. So, we won't go there again.
