Detroit
Lunch and Detroit River
Friday, August 19, 2011
After our visit to the Lingenfelter Collection, Leonard and Carol wanted to introduces us to a BBQ restaurant they had gone to with her cousin, SLOWS. So we took the cars back to the hotel and piled into the truck. We got a little turned around getting to the restaurant, but our timing was perfect anyhow, as we got a table for 6 right away and the one that Leonard wanted to boot. All those 2s and 4s watched us walk right in with real envy. SLOWS specialty is pulled pork and all of their servings are a healthy size. Each couple split an order. Leonard and Carol stuck with their pulled pork, but the Glenores and the Webers ordered combo plates so they could taste the ribs and brisket and chicken as well. They offer 5 types of sauce, so the meats come unadorned and you just make sauce puddles on your plate and try them all. Of course, the Mac 'n Cheese tasting went on as there were several side orders of it. The waitress was kind enough to stand on a chair and get a photo of all us enjoying our meals. After lunch, we opted to find the river that runs between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, Canada and the bridge you take. We strolled along the embankment, with Rob and Carol remembering boat rides from their childhood. There were huge maps carved into the marble walkways showing the Great Lakes and the surrounding area. A children's literacy program was having a story-telling or book-reading event by the carrousel and one of the readers was Lean Horne's granddaughter. All in all, another great time provided by our Detroit "hosts", the Buotes.
