New York
Day 2

New York Day 2

Frank and Maria had other plans for Sunday and so did we. It was our intent to visit as many of the markets and

food halls as we could. We took our time getting rolling and had a cab take us to Eataly, Mario Batali's 42,000 sq

ft Italian marketplace. They sell everything you could possibly want that has to do with Italian food and they have

all sorts of eating areas. For instance, you can buy fish at the fishmonger's and also sit at the counter and have

grilled Branzini stuffed with herbs. It is clear they are making a fortune off this place. There were folks loading

their baskets with packages of $32/lb cheese and $5 radicchio, to say nothing about the meats, fish and wine.

Daryl would be in heaven or trouble, whichever fits, if she lived in NYC.

Next on the list was the Chelsea Market, about 15 blocks away. We did not find this quite as appealing, although

their fish market is unbelievable, with types of fish we had never heard of but would certainly like to try. They

had a whole section of partially prepared fish – e.g. blackened marinated, stuffed, etc. - so if you were a busy

New Yorker, all you had to do was run in and buy it, run home and stick it in the oven or on the grill. Another

danger zone for Daryl! All the well known NY bakers have retail outlets and bakeries at this place.

Our third stop was Todd English's Food Hall beneath the Plaza Hotel. This was much smaller and focused more

on prepared foods and meals you could eat there. The nice thing was that you could walk around and check out the

grill or the sushi place or the pasta place and then they would seat you and you could order from anywhere in the

Hall. That said, we had lunch, and then ambled past Central Park and headed back to the ship....in time for dinner.

Do you see a thread running through this whole trip??? Why it is food, of course!
