Savannah to Charleston

Savannah to Charleston

We had been looking forward to seeing Savannah, GA as we had heard good things about the
historic areas of town. As we entered the port we realized that we had not known what a
large industrial port it was. We were prepared to take a trolley tour around the city, but
were totally unprepared for the weather, which was very wet and windy. Savannah has only
recently become a stop for cruise ships and the port area where we docked was not set up
very well. We all walked a distance in the rain to get on the buses the Port Authority had
arranged for those not going on organized tours. The bus dropped us off in the lower port
area which is extremely touristy and we all had to walk up cobblestone streets to the
upper level where the historic parts of town were located. We, like many others,
walked around for 30 minutes and took the return bus to the ship where we had a hot
shower and spent the rest of the day reading.

The weather improved as we left the port and we could see
that the city was pretty interesting, but by then it was too late. Maybe on another
trip...Charleston is only 95 nautical miles up the coast so we cruised along pretty
slowly during the evening and overnight.

Dinner was at Red Ginger where the food is
certainly a change from the usual Oceania fare, with a Thai twist and interesting
combinations of food and beautiful dishes. The finale is your choice of a number of teas
served in lovely glass pots. Next time I will have the White Pear and Ginger again!
Rob stuck with the Orange Pekoe.
