Ronne/Bornholm, Denmark August 29

Bornholm is an island of 42,000 inhabitants belonging to Denmark, but located in the middle of the Baltic. We had a 4 hour tour scheduled at 8:45am to see a Round Church and the Baltic Sea Glass factory. It was another of our rare sunny days and the bus took us through Ronne, the capital, where we were docked, to Osterlas to see the Round Church, something found only in this area. It is, as it says, a round building about 3 levels with frescoes around the interior walls on the lowest level and a narrow winding stone staircase up to the top to see the views of the pastoral landscape. From there we drove to the Eastern Coast and Gudkjen for smoked herring, bread and beer and a walk around the quaint beach town with many glass shops.

Our next stop was Baltic Sea Glass. Pete, an American, and his wife, Margarett, a Dane started the business 32 years ago and have an interesting style of glass blowing and making that we have not seen before, focusing on honeycomb and corncob styles. We did not stand in line to purchase something to carry home as we know we can go on line and do so at our leisure. It was certainly unlike any other glasswork we have seen among all the places we have been.

Our final stop was in Svaneke, a beautiful town with great clothing and chocolate stores. The local fabrics were tempting, but we settled for chocolates.

In all, we really liked Bornholm – again it was friendly, beautiful and clean.

We returned to the ship and, rare for us, had dinner in the Grand Dining Room, where we were well treated by Marius and met Boris, the Restaurant Manager for the whole ship, a good man to know.
