Clackamas River to Detroit Lake to Bend to Portland

This ride takes you up the Clackamas River, through the Cascade Mountains to Detroit Lake.

Starting from I-205, at exit 12 for highways 212/224, head East on highway 224 to Estacada. Be sure to gas up in Estacada. Head East on 224 up the Clackamas River. Follow 224 past the Ripplebrook Ranger Station to where it intersects Forest Road 46 to Detroit. From Detroit, follow highway 22 to where it intersects with highway 20 and follow it toward Bend or Redmond.

Back to Portland: From Bend or Redmond, follow highway 97 North to Madras. There are several options here:
  1. Shortest: From Madras you can simply catch highway 26 West back to Portland.
  2. Longer: From Madras, follow highway 97 North to highway 197 to highway 216 in Maupin. Head West on 216 to where it intersects with highway 26 back to Portland. Another option is to follow the Deschuttes River Road North to where it intersects 216 and then head West on 26 back to Portland.
  3. Longest: From Madras, follow highway 97 North to Grass Valley. Follow highway 216 West to Tygh Valley. Follow Forest Road 48 West to highways 26 or 35 back to Portland or Hood River.
